On the size of the Peru upwelling ecosystem

چکیده

Previously published estimates of the area of the Peru upwelling ecosystem vary by more than an order of magnitude. In an effort to improve this situation, we used a 24-month sequence of SeaWiFS satellite images of chlorophyll in the surface water off Peru from 51S to 18.51S during September 1997–August 1999 to estimate the size of the nutrient enhanced productive habitat associated with the upwelling. The first 12month period was marked by El Ni * no conditions, the second by strong upwelling. Using a chlorophyll threshold of >1.0mgm to define the limit of the productive habitat resulted in maximum area estimates of 120 10 km during September 1997–August 1998, and 220 10 km during September 1998–August 1999. The latter result is consistent with an area estimate we calculated using total fishery landings and a regression relating fishery yields per unit area to annual primary production per unit area. Although yearto-year variation in the annual mean size of the upwelling ecosystem must be significant, even discounting El Ni * no events, our analysis has shown that at least five of the extreme earlier values are not good estimates of the size of the productive habitat. We may now be close to knowing the average size of the ecosystem to within a factor of about two. r 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Trophic modelling of the Peruvian upwelling ecosystem: Towards reconciliation of multiple datasets

In the 1980s, personnel from the Instituto del Mar del Peru collaborated with foreign experts to reconstruct time series of (1) catch and biomass of the Peruvian anchovy Engraulis ringens back to 1953, along with parallel time series of (2) abundance of anchovy predators and competitors, and (3) abiotic parameters indicative of the dynamics of the Peruvian upwelling system. This contribution do...

Phytoplankton size structure and primary production in a highly dynamic coastal ecosystem (Rı́a de Vigo, NW-Spain): Seasonal and short-time scale variability

Size-fractionated phytoplankton biomass and primary production, together with net community metabolism, were measured in a coastal ecosystem (Rı́a de Vigo, NW-Spain) during a full annual cycle (July 2001eJuly 2002). On a seasonal scale, this ecosystem was characterized by two distinct oceanographic conditions, namely upwelling and downwelling favourable seasons. During the upwelling season, tota...

Mass balance models of Ekman transport and nutrient fluxes in coastal upwelling zones

The nutrient cycles of coastal upwelling zones are studied with simple mass balance models of Ekman transport, longshore transport, surface productivity, and dissolved phosphorous. The models are constrained with data from the Peru, northwest Africa, and Oregon upwelling systems. The onshore-offshore mass balance model agrees with published Ekman transport, surface productivity, and nutrient da...

Oxygen: A Fundamental Property Regulating Pelagic Ecosystem Structure in the Coastal Southeastern Tropical Pacific

BACKGROUND In the southeastern tropical Pacific anchovy (Engraulis ringens) and sardine (Sardinops sagax) abundance have recently fluctuated on multidecadal scales and food and temperature have been proposed as the key parameters explaining these changes. However, ecological and paleoecological studies, and the fact that anchovies and sardines are favored differently in other regions, raise que...
